Session Description

Join Dr. Martina McGhee as she offers participants ways to explore their own identities and evaluate or determine privileges that may lead to unintentional biases within the classroom. The session will also engage participants in identity conversations related to race, gender, and sexuality.

Learning Outcomes


The participants will learn how to help their students:

  • Develop positive self-identities based on their membership in multiple groups in society. (Identity)​

  • Respectfully express curiosity about the history and lived experiences of others and exchange ideas and beliefs in an open-minded way (Diversity)​

  • Identify figures, groups, events, and a variety of strategies and philosophies relevant to the history of social justice around the world (Justice)​

  • Recognize their own responsibility to stand up to exclusion, prejudice, and injustice (Action)​

Martina P. McGhee, Ph.D., is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Elementary Education at Auburn University. She recently earned her doctorate in Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching: Curriculum & Instruction at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

The UIW Teacher Induction Program was created in 2012 to provide graduates with high-quality support as they transition into the teaching profession. The UIW Teacher Network was designed with three main facets: induction support, professional development, and professional networking.

2015 TEA Commendation

The University of the Incarnate Word received a commendation from the Texas Education Agency for its innovative teacher induction program, the UIW Teacher Network, which supports candidates after initial certification, during their first three years of teaching, to improve teacher retention in the profession.​
