Q:   Can you share the moment you realized that you wanted to be a teacher?

A:   I knew early on that I wanted to be a teacher thanks to my amazing elementary teachers I was so blessed to have.

Q:   How did the Teacher Education program at UIW prepare you for your role as a teacher? My college experience at UIW ensured I was ready for the real-world challenges of the classroom.

A:    I was exposed to a range of courses that gave me a strong foundation in education theory. I learned about different learning theories, child development, and the history and philosophy of education, which helped me understand how and why students learn in different ways. These courses also emphasized the importance of cultural competency, which is vital for addressing the diverse needs of students in today's classrooms.

Q:   What is your favorite memory from the Teacher Education program at the University of the Incarnate Word?

A:    My favorite times at UIW were my classes with Professor Mary Ruth Moore. Her passion and love for education made me so much more confident that education was where I belonged.

Q:   How long have you been working in education?

A:   I am in my 14th year of teaching.

Q:   Tell us about your current position/job.

A:    I am currently the Lead First Grade Teacher at Somerset Academy Collegiate and the Girls Middle School Basketball Coach.

Q:   What do you love the most about your current job?

A:   I love the different little personalities I get to see every day. There is never a dull moment as a first-grade teacher. I also love when my former students come and check in with me.

Q:   What advice would you give to future educators or anyone considering a career in teaching?

A:    It's a challenging career BUT so rewarding at the same time. Knowing you are making a difference in these young lives is the driving force. Always stay focused on your students and what's in their best interest.

Q:  What are your career goals for the next five years?

A:     I plan on going back to school to receive my Masters in Education. Just not sure in exactly what yet.
